Historical Notes & Pictures

The town of Avant was named for prominent Osage Ben Avant, who was shot to death for hitching his horse in town at a place where only automobiles were allowed.

A very good resource on Osage County history was written by  Jenk Jones, jr. located at the web site below.

Photos of Avant Community & School

The picture below (date unknown) was taken during construction of the Avant High School.   As can be seen, it has three levels and was a very impressive school for its time.

The picture below is of the same school building (later date) that shows an addition has been added to the back of the school.  The historic photo of this building is available on epodunk.com , which has placed here with permission.

The town's main street was once filled with businesses. The picture below is a turn of the 20th century retail store.

The Town of Avant experienced a series of fires that closed many of its businesses. Below are two photos of a fire, presumably the same fire dated February 28, 1912.  (The date can be seen on the first photo)

The photos have been reduced in size and resolution for use on our web page. If you'd like to see the photos in their full size and at 300 DPI resolution use the links below.
